Gerber Daily Carry

Gerber Daily Carry complete set
Gerber Daily Carry complete set

This is a concept not unfamiliar to the COG team: preparedness. Being at the ready for everyday crises, big and small. Especially important on the trail miles from civilization. But also when you’re trundling down dark city streets. Besides your key fob and cell phone, what do you need? There are endless blogs and websites discussing these very needs.

Common daily carries
Some examples of ‘daily carries’

Every Day Carry (EDC) One popular site has the readership submit photos of their EDC. Interesting to see what individuals consider the essentials. Another blog has similar content. A surprising number of folks consider a small pistol to be part of their EDC. As a writer/doodler my first weapon is always a pen. You can’t imagine how dear and hard to find a writing tool is when you need it. And a scrap of paper. So that’s it for me: cell, keys, pen and paper and a small knife to take on tough apples. And a small LED flashlight to push back the darkness.

Gerber Daily Carry shard
Gerber Shard

Years ago Gerber gave a EDC tool, the Shard. I still don’t know what to make of it. It looks a bit like a performing seal. But if I thought I needed a small and medium flat screwdriver and a Philips head driver with pry bar, wire stripper, and bottle opener, I’d carry it. Still on the books for eight bucks. Complete with hole to add to the keychain.

The Gerber Daily Carry line, GDC includes four pocketable tools  the Zip Blade, the Zip Driver, the Zip Hex, and the Zip Light, each going for $12. They are certainly minimal, just enough to get the job done, and they easily unclip from the lanyard to your fob/keychain. The Zip blade only protrudes about 3/4″, just enough to slice our mail open. The Zip light is a coin cell unit with a bright LED, running on CR1616 coin cell, with 8 lumens and a 3.5 hour runtime. The Zip Hex provides hex wrenches, 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm. Just the combination to tighten the water bottle holder or the seat post on my commuter bike. The Zip Driver has a large and small flat screwdriver, and a large and small Philips screwdriver.

Gerber Daily Carry keychain plus
Gerber Hook Knife

Another in the line is the GDC Hook Knife. Has a large ring for your finger and slips from its plastic sheath with a tug. Made to cut through seatbelts and such. We found it to be bit small for that task, although it was just about perfect for cutting zip ties.

$12 each

Bear Grylls Canteen Water Bottle with Cooking Cup

Bear Grylls Canteen Water Bottle with Cooking Cup
Bear Grylls Canteen Water Bottle with Cooking Cup

Gerber, as part of their Bear Grylls Survival line, has come up with this update on the classic military plastic canteen.

Made now of BPA-free plastic with a textured grip enhancing and a securely locking leakproof cap. Fitted to the base is another classic military item: a fitted cup/cooking pot. Made of  food grade aluminum, it holds about 8oz. The whole outfit comes fitted in a nylon belt-riding pouch. Also in the box is a Bear Grylls’ “Priorities of Survival” pocket guide.

Your testers have become leery of any plastic water vessels or aluminum cooking pots, and are not convinced that a stainless steel water bottle wouldn’t do both jobs better. Unless you’re going for the space-age military look.

Bear Grylls Intense Torch/Survival Flashlight

Bear Grylls Intense Torch / Survival Flashlight
Bear Grylls Intense Torch/Survival Flashlight

We like the “Torch” connotation. Yes, Bear comes from England, the land of Torches, not flashlights. But this is one Intense Torch with a 140 lumens of light right out of the box.

Powered by 2 AA batteries, you can fire up this torch for over 90 minutes at the intense setting. The medium 35 lumen beam will burn for 8.5 hours, while the low 17 lumen beam lasts for 17 hours. A SOS mode is included for big trouble, as is a momentary on switch for flashing out those morse code signals to your fellow scouts. We could clearly illuminate things in trees 200 feet out!

Particularly handy is the bright orange anodized finish with blazing logos for both Gerber and Grylls, easy to find in your black survival BOB (Bug Out Bag) and on the trail. We’re also fond of the textured rubber grip around the mid section. Easy to hang onto and also easy on the teeth, if you need to stuff it in your mouth for two-handed jobs. Another nice design feature is the triangular shape, guaranteed not to roll away.

Packaged with a handy lanyard–hang it on your wrist or in your tent. And this vessel is tight, guaranteed to be waterproof. Overall Length: 5.98”, 22.8cm. Weight: 3.89 oz, 110.3 grams. CREE XPG-R5 LED bulb.

“Bear” Grylls, the British adventurer, writer and television personality, best known for his TV series Man vs Wild on the Discovery Channel. We don’t care if he stayed in motels while portraying survival scenarios, the man has done some serious adventures, including crossing the North Atlantic in a rubber boat, and paramotoring over the top of Everest (he’d already climbed it at the age of 23). And his show provided great survival tips and entertainment. In the last several years he has teamed with Gerber to design and brand a line of Survival Gear, packaged with Grylls’ muddy face. The line includes hatchets, knives, lights, survival blankets and survival kits, and we plan to note and review several of them soon.

Gerber Omnivore Multi-Battery LED Flashlight

Omnivore Multi-Battery LED Flashlight
Gerber Omnivore Multi-Battery LED Flashlight

Ever find yourself stuck with a dimming flashlight and the wrong batteries on hand? Gerber’s Omnivore handles this task easily: it will swallow a variety of batteries.

Use either a standard AA, AAA or the harder to find and more expensive CR123. We dropped each of the three batteries in the Omnivore and were able to blaze away with a bright 7 watt LED. Unit is housed in sturdy aircraft-grade aluminum. One AA battery included. Take note that size of the battery will affect performance and run-time. We found smaller batteries had less lumens and life.
