The good news is the Odeo (Omni-directional-electro-optical) Flare provides the look and feel of a traditional flare without all the hazards.

Similar in size to traditional flares, it uses battery powered lasers, instead of dangerous pyrotechnics to provide a brilliant distress signal that floats. It will stay lit for over 5 hours, while a handheld flare might go half a minute, or up to 30 minutes for a road flare. Because no hazardous chemicals are used, the Odeo Flare is totally safe when switched off.
While originally designed for marine use, its lightweight, safe performance means that it could be useful for all manner of outdoor activity. Powered by three L91 lithium iron-disulphide cells (spec’d for 14-year shelf life), which can be swapped with your average AA batteries in a pinch. Five independently driven Class 3R laser diodes are spun 360 degrees at variable speeds up to 240 rpm.
Length; (265mm) 10.43 inches. Width: (50 mm) 1.97 inches. Weight: (330 gm) 1.6 oz. Class 3R lasers are deemed safe, but don’t look at them too long, as you wouldn’t a conventional flare.
